Flights of Fancy

The Roman god Mercury was the patron of financial gain, commerce, luck, trickery, messages and communication.  His figure graces this extraordinary clock that has been donated to Elite Repeat.  Truly a treasure of America’s Gilded Age, this piece by the Ansonia Clock Company was made sometime between 1886 and 1894.  It has received meticulous maintenance, documented by handwritten notes which came with the clock.  The clock mechanism has been checked out and is in good working order.  The exterior of the clock shows some signs of age, and one of the wings on Mercury’s helmet has been broken off.  The sound of the gong is rich and mellow.  This clock must surely have represented affluence and elegance when it was new, and it does no less today.

This photo shows some of the imperfections in the aged finish. Note the wings on Mercury's helmet--the right one is broken off, but what's that critter perched on the top of the helmet?
